Changes in the Law

In 2012 training for water service providers and professional lake installers will be required by law.

In 2011 attendance at training sessions for professional lake installers was voluntary.

That has all changed due to newly enacted provisions in the law. In 2012 training for professional lake installers will be required by law.

WAPOA will continue to work with the DNR, MN Waters, and Blaistf to facilitate this training for installers in our area.

Some area installers voluntarily took training in 2010 and 2011 before it was required. WAPOA salutes their dedication to preserving the lakes.

The following four paragraphs are taken from the MN DNR website.

Service Providers

• Service providers are individuals or businesses hired to install or remove water-related equipment or structures from waters of the state.

• Service providers must obtain a permit from DNR before providing any services and must have a valid permit in possession while providing services.

• Service providers must complete invasive species training and pass an examination in order to qualify for a permit. Permits are valid for 3 years.

• Persons working for service providers that have a permit are required to complete DNR aquatic invasive species training.

What all this means for you as a lakeshore resident:

If you have someone installing your dock next spring or doing other lakeshore work, make sure they know how to clean their equipment before they come to your property. They have to have a valid permit in their possesion as they do their services.

You do not want to take a chance that they could transfer invasive species such as the invasive zebra mussel (a clam "relative") or Eurasian watermilfoil ( a lake clogging plant).

WAPOA, will work with the MN DNR, MN Waters, and Blaistf, as they all do what they can to facilitate the classes.

Experts will be teaching them techniques to enable them to avoid transferring invasive species from infected lakes to your lake and your waterfront.

Make sure that your installer receives the 3-year certification by attending a class for water service providers.
