Welcome to CLPOA website  Caribou Lake is located 4 miles north of the town  of  Lutsen in Cook County, MN (MN Lake ID #16-0360).  This lake has a total surface area of 728 acres and a maximum depth of 30 feet. Caribou Lake is located in the NLF, Northern Lakes and Forests ecoregion and the LSB, Lake Superior, river basin, swimming is fully supported. Caribou Lake Property Owners Association was formed in the 1970's for property owners in the watershed in order to inform, educate and provide support to protect our watershed.  The association meets twice a year on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.  All property owners are encouraged and welcomed to attend the meetings. Update:  August 2011 mating loons abandoned nest and no babies were hatched.  Loon platforms used by Black ducks egg shells found on platforms.  May 2011 two loon platforms were placed in lake.  Have noticed 5 loons on lake, 2 loons around island at location of previous nests until end of May. They then were not observed to be there anymore.  They reappeared around 2 weeks later and are once again "hanging around" where previous nests have been located. Hopefully we will have nest with eggs on island and maybe a couple more on platforms.   
July 2010: The mating loons on the island had one chick on their nest on the island.  Goldeneye ducks layed eggs on the loon platform but no ducks were hatched. 
July 2009:  The mating pair of loons on the island had one check born on born in June.  Unfortunately there were no loons nesting on the loon platforms they have been removed from lake and will be put ou again next year (it is uncommon for them to use the platforms the first year they are out).  Pat Vaughan did the loon count on July 9 and there were 5 adults and one chick. This was reported to the State for the Loon Watch Program and the Loon Count Program.  Guided by Pat Scott Benson photographed Caribou Lake loons  on June 24, 2009 (note the food in the loon beak to feed the baby on the other loons back).  Scott Benson Photography
